Its a new year and time for celebration and fun. Its a time for rebirth and starting over. Have you started or tried anything new with your partner? Its time for some lovin’ and smooth sensual lovin’ is the best. That’s a reason why I wanted to share my review for Moist Gel. For everyone who wants a smooth, sensual and sexy start to the New Year — its time to show a little self love (masturbate) and to show your partner how much you want to please them. That also means it would be a great time to try Moist Gel – Personal Lubricant.
Some time ago I shared my review for Moist Lubricant – http://shedyourinhibitions.com/2010/05/27/sex-toy-review-moist-personal-lubricant/
The regular Moist Lubricant is very good – but some people may have a concern about it being a thin liquid. The gel form is for people who are looking for a thicker lubricant. This is still very easy to use and spreads great on your hands or other body parts but it is a thicker consistency. You could try both – to see which consistency you prefer. It will likely remind you of a hair gel product when you first feel it.
If you haven’t used a lube before or if you’re looking for suggestions, here are some Master Sexpert Tips
Lube is beneficial for many forms of sexual activity – masturbation, vaginal intercourse, anal sex and flavored lubes are great for oral sex – pick your flavor or choice or try different flavors. Some lubes are especially made for use in the tub, shower or hot tub.
- Never use a silicone lube with silicone toys.
- Always use a water based lube inside a woman’s body
- Always use a water based lube with condoms – oil and petroleum based lubes should not be used with condoms because it can cause the condom to deteriorate
- Warming lubes are great for nipple and breast stimulation and can be used on the genitals – however all lubes will help your hands slide over your partner’s body easier and more sensually
- If you prefer more vigorous sex – definitely use lube to cut down on the friction and to let your partner thrust harder and longer. The lube provides the option to have more rigorous sex without the chafing etc that can happen after rough and/or long lovemaking sessions.
- Water based lubes are a great choice, they are compatible with all toys and with condoms, it is easy to clean, and it doesn’t stain.
- You may want to test several types of lubes on your own to see which type and what feel you like better. Then keep it close to your bed, in your glove compartment or purse — depending on where you plan to have sex

- Moist Gel is thick enough to be used for anal sex
- The tube is easy to open, easy to get the desired amount of lube out and easy to close.

As we getting closer to the biggest gift giving time of the year – I’m catching up a bunch of product reviews. Hope you will bear with me and I hope that you get some fun and sexy gift ideas. Over the last year, I’ve tried to share a wide variety of product reviews and if you’d like to see them all, visit my main review page where I post links to all reviews. (http://shedyourinhibitions.com/reviews-by-mitzi)
The latest item I got from CalExotics is the Calypso 7 Speed Massager. The shape and appearance of this item is very unique and how can you go wrong with 7 speeds. We’re all familiar with the usual vibrators – but there are so many other stimulating options for individuals and couples.
The Calypso has a unique shape which is great to use yourself or with a partner to stimulate just about any erogenous zone for both of you. Remember that you can use toys on any part of the body — don’t just focus on the genital areas. You have erogenous zones all over your body and so does your partner.
One of the first things I noticed about the Calypso is the “soft silicone pleasure nubs” – well I call it the scrubby surface
That feels good and stimulating to any part of the body and with the 7 different settings, you can definitely find a setting that feels good for all locations on the body and also easily change it to fit your changing mood and as you become more aroused…..
I did have a little trouble figuring out how to work the controls — but you see the small button on the right side, just push that to change the setting and this was the complicated part – hold down on the button to turn it off. The part shown on the right comes off so you can put the batteries in — it is a very snug fit, but it does slide apart.
Let’s Get Down to the Nitty Gritty with the Master Sexpert Tips -
Always clean your toys thoroughly before and after you play and especially on the “pleasure nubs” – but this one doesn’t appear to be waterproof
If you use the Calypso anywhere near the anus, clean it before playing near the vagina.
Use your imagination and be very creative with this toy. The shape is great for using on your own body or your partner’s – and you can use the side with the nubs, the end or the other side. However you choose to use it – the goal is to stimulate yourself and/or your partner.
- You can use lube with this to help it slide across the body easier – but keep it away from the opening for the batteries.
- You might want to add this to a massage for your partner
- It can also be a great addition to your self love time
- Remember to try the different speeds/pulses to see what feels best to your partner
- When using this on someone else, remember that the “pleasure nubs” will intensify your touch, so pay attention to your partner’s reactions.
- Keep in mind – you and your partner have erogenous zones all over your body — so try them all or simply start moving the Calypso along the skin, across the shoulders and shoulder blades, slide down to run it around and across the breasts, maybe use it to enhance a foot or leg massage, use it to tease her or his perineum — you get the idea….
- And, last but not least — have fun

I really get tired of people claiming to be an addict as an excuse for bad behavior. We all remember Tiger Woods and Jesse James – were they addicts or just misbehaving? I think they felt entitled to whatever they wanted and that entitlement was more important than their wives. But, that’s just my opinion.
However, it is possible to watch too much porn or to masturbate too much. Before you proceed, it is likely that some people will not agree with some of the things I mention here. But I work hard not to be biased or judgmental in my posts and to remain as open minded as possible.
We know that sex is our second basic instinct – although it may seem like the first for some people :) Since it is such an important instinct – its only natural that we think about sex a lot. Although it seems that people are more focused on sex when they don’t feel they are getting enough – but that’s a topic for another day.
Anything can be addictive – especially if it makes us feel good. That can include: food, drugs, alcohol, porn, masturbation and plenty of other things that makes us feel good. The point of this post is not to berate people or to tell people that they are wrong – however, you should know the warning signs if porn or masturbation are becoming too big a part of your life and are getting to a point where they are out of control.
Anything in your life can be a compulsion. When any behavior gets to that point, you are driven by an irresistible impulse. At that point, its no longer a desire for you – you feel that you have no choice and your condition forces you to act in a certain way. So, its beneficial to know the warning signs before it becomes a compulsion.
If any of these apply to you – it could be time to take a closer look at your actions and what is motivating you. Let’s be honest, watching porn and masturbation usually go hand in hand (pun intended). So these warning signs pertain to both.
- You stay home and don’t go out
- You avoid dating all together
- You choose to work at home so you can watch porn and/or masturbate
- You prefer to stay in bed alone
- Your hand hurts
- Your wrists are sore
- You put a DVD in and the lube on
- You back up the DVD and watch it so you can get off again
- Your time online is just to search for porn
- You log on, just to get off
- You have a sticky and/or wet keyboard or smart phone
These are just some suggestions. Are there other things you feel could indicate that you are addicted to porn or masturbating?
Earlier I mentioned being compulsive about something. Here are some of the identifying characteristics of a compulsive masturbator. Do these apply to you?
- A person who isolates themselves in order to masturbate
- A person who avoids a relationship because they masturbate
- A person who masturbates in public
- A person who is obsessed with touching themselves in an erotic way
- A person who masturbates to the point where no other sexual activity is satisfying to them
- A person who’s work suffers because they masturbate
- A person who spends a lot of money on porn so they can masturbate alone
- A person who lies to their partner about how much they masturbate
- A person who masturbates to avoid their problems
- A person who is overly preoccupied with masturbation
If you have a real problem – several of these should apply to you. But if you find 1 or 2 of these things are familiar, do yourself and your partner a favor and think about this seriously.
You can share porn with your partner, you can use porn for some stimulation when you masturbate. And, you can learn so much about yourself and what you like sexually through masturbation. There is also the option to masturbate with your partner – and help each of you learn more about each other. Porn and masturbation are not negative things – but like anything in life, you can take them too far and then it can become a problem.

I have done several reviews for various lubricants, stimulants and System JO Massage Glide, which can also be used as a lube. Today, I want to share details about the great options from System JO. We’re going to cover plenty of options — get your wish list ready.
Are you one of the people who doesn’t use or has never used a lubricant? Many people feel they don’t need to use any additional lubrication or have some confusion about lubes, but I would highly recommend that you give it a try. Maybe you’ve tried KY or water, or saliva – these are okay, but none are really effective. Some lube can also be great for foreplay when you’re both getting in the mood. There are also some times when women won’t be a wet, even with the usual stimulation — so add some lube to make it more pleasurable for both of you. If you’re embarrassed about buying lubricant at the store, you can order it online and its shipped to you discreetly. The items I share in this post can all be found here – http://www.systemjo.com/public/products/jo-personal-lubricants
The need or desire to use lube when you’re having sex, enjoying some foreplay or even masturbating — don’t feel like using lube shows anything lacking in your body or your technique. Its a totally natural thing to add extra lubrication. For fast sex, you may not need any lubrication, for a pre-lubed condom, you may not need anything extra. But for long lasting sexual intercourse, for sex in a hot tub or pool, for anal sex or simply for wetter sex with less friction – lube is the answer. You may have heard of people using a lot of lube, you should experiment with the amount and type of lube that’s best for you and your partner.
One of the great things about lube is that you can decide how wet you want your play to be — you can add a little lube to
limit the amount of friction or you can use more during times and activities when you need more lubrication. You can also use a lot of lube if you prefer a “sloppy wet” experience. Lube is another way to make the sexual experience the best it can be for you and your partner. Flavored lubes are great for oral sex – they provide additional moisture and many people enjoy choosing a flavor. Some of the options include: raspberry sorbet, chocolate delight, lemon splash, peachy lips, cherry burst, banana lick, juicy pineapple, sweet pomegranate, strawberry kiss, tangerine dream, tropical passion and flavored watermelon. Think of the options and combinations — yummmm
Anyone who reads my posts know how much I like to recommend creativity and spontaneity….
Here are some of your options with SystemJO – to get your imagination working.
You can start with a simple water based lube – it is compatible with all materials, safe to use in or on the body, is very easy to clean up and comes in warming, cooling, flavored and regular varieties. It is safe for use with condoms and with any kind of toys – including any silicone toys.
A Premium Silicone Lube which is very long lasting, can be used in water, but should not be used inside the body or with silicone toys.
The flavored lubes are scented and flavored to add several additional sensory benefits for you and your partner. These are also very good for people who are leery or uncomfortable giving oral sex. With a wide variety of flavors, there is something for everyone.
Do you like the warming or cooling sensations – System JO offers lubes that are warming or cooling to the touch. You can use one or the other, or a combination of the two. It all depends on what you and your lover like – or how creative you want to get. Maybe you want a cooling touch on your nipples and a warming touch between your legs – that is very easy to accomplish with warming and cooling lubes.
Seriously – the sky is the limit and you are only limited by your imagination — take a look at the options and buy a variety pack and see which sensations you like the best. You can experiment with how much lube is best for you. Pour some warming lube or massage glide on your hands and then start by massaging your partner’s breasts. Maybe your partner would like you to start with their feet and work your way up their legs – your lube slicked hands are going to feel very erotic and your hands slide over their skin.
Your partner probably doesn’t want to feel like you are “groping” them, but some lube gives you the advantage of having a stimulating and erotic touch as you slide your hands over parts of your partner’s body. Again — you should experiment with how much lube is best for you. System JO lubes are thicker than many, they are long last (silicone being the most long lasting) and they are very moisturizing. I have found that their products really are not sticky or tacky — they feel natural. I have not tried them all, but I have tried 5 or 6 different products and they feel great.
Master Sexpert Tips
Let’s get down to my Master Sexpert Tips for you —

- The wide variety of lubes offer you and your partner many possibilities – so give it a try and see what feels best for you and your lover.

Some women want or need some additional stimulation to be satisfied when they make love. This is something that

they can have, very easily and it can greatly increase their sexual satisfaction. Sometimes you just need a bit more – to help you reach a climax.
This clitoral stimulation gel gives you a warm and tingling sensation. Imagine the feeling of your partner’s warm breath on you and combine that with the tingling sensation of peppermint — this is the feeling you get with this gel. Combined with your usual stimulation by yourself or with your partner – you experience a more intense climax.
You may want to experiment with how much of the stimulation gel you personally need. The tube says there is enough in this small tube for up to 50 applications. If you want to get creative — and I always recommend being creative – you could use a bit on your nipples, ear lobes, your perineum, and so many other spots on your body and your partner’s body. I can’t guarantee that you will enjoy testing this stimulation gel on your erogenous zones – but I like so suggest creative ideas. And remember to give back to your partner. Feel free to come back and post ideas about where you would like to try this gel….
JO Clitoral Stimulant Gel is formulated to promote sexual sensitivity in women, resulting in a gratifying orgasmic response. JO Clitoral Stimulant Gel will cause a pleasant and satisfying warm and cooling tingling sensation resulting in increased sexual pleasure and satisfaction.
- The only Silicone Based Stimulating Gel
- NO L-Arginine

I’ve heard about System JO and their wide variety of products, but never tried them until this week. So, I have a box of several of their products - now, the question was which one to try first. I love massages, so I just couldn’t resist. We’re all familiar with massage oil and lotions, but System JO calls their’s a Massage Glide. I like that and was curious to feel the difference. Its wonderful!
I’ve tried quite a few massage oils and lotions and I’ve had a decent number of massages (although never enough
and have never felt a product that felt this good. Seriously, its wonderful and its what they call, an All-in-One. From everything I read and could find, that is a massage oil, a lubricant and a moisturizer. That’s not bad at all they claim that 1 drop of System JO is equal to 10-15 drops of another product — so you save money and it would seem that means it wouldn’t be as messy as some massage oils.
If you want to give a therapeutic massage or a more intimate erotic massage — I highly recommend that you try System JO’s Massage Glide. (If you want to give an erotic massage, click here for my suggestions.)
For a full body massage, for some arousing self love, to make your foreplay “smoother” and to go directly from foreplay to lubricated intercourse, this is the only product you need. A great side perk is that it makes your hands and skin silky smooth too. Even if you just want to spoil your partner, keep this Massage Glide in mind for a shoulder massage or if you like to pay attention to your partner’s feet, this will make it even better.
I played with the product quite a while and it does last for a long time and it didn’t get tacky or sticky at all. I’ve heard the phrase silky smooth before – but this has a great feel on your hands and on your body. And, isn’t that one of the key qualities we want in a massage or lube product?
Master Sexpert Tips -
- System JO Massage Glide comes in Unscented, Citrus, Lavender and a Warming Glide
- With some lubes you need to be careful with condoms, this is latex compatible
- We know that often a massage can turn into much more, with this Massage Glide, you’re ready for any activity
- Even if moisture isn’t a concern for you and your partner, a bit of lube can make sex more enjoyable.
- Lube is perfect for those times when you want that extra smooth, silky feel in your love making.
- Lube is beneficial for many forms of sexual activity – massage, masturbation, vaginal intercourse, anal sex.
- Warming lubes are great for nipple and breast stimulation and can be used on the genitals
- If you and your partner prefer more vigorous sex – definitely use lube to cut down on the friction and to let your partner thrust harder – for longer.
- Oil and petroleum based lubes should not be used with condoms because it can cause the condom to deteriorate – KY Jelly should NOT be used with condoms
- Water based lubes are a great choice, they are compatible with all toys and with condoms, it is easy to clean, and it doesn’t stain.
- You may want to test several types of lubes on your own to see which type and what feel you like better. Then keep it close to your bed, in your glove compartment or purse — depending on where you plan to give a massage or to have sex.
- Put a small amount of System JO Massage Glide in the palm of your hands and place your hands on your partner’s body. Like I always say — use your imagination and be creative. Let your silky smooth hands roam and see what your partner enjoys. When you’re finished, hand them the bottle…. then its your turn.

Last month I did a review for the Couture Collection Calypso I and this toy can be used in a very similar manner. This is wireless which makes it a bit more flexible and easier to play with – with your partner. This toy is available in blue and pink — mine is blue, so the picture is accurate
I will tell you that there is an instruction booklet – in a variety of languages and an adapter on the charger. There are several pieces to this toy: the egg, the charging base, the remote control, it comes with 1 rechargeable battery and the charger cord.
You will need to charge the egg before using it for the first time. While it is charging, there is a red light on the egg and when its ready to go – the light turns green. Then, push the small button on the top to turn it on – when you’re finished, push the button and hold till the red light shines on the egg.
Okay – once the egg is charged, you’re ready to play. The egg is a nice size and it fits well in the palm of my hand. This makes it great to use all over your partner’s body – to stimulate all their erogenous zones. There are 7 different pulses and vibrations – so no matter how much power or intensity you and your partner want, you will be able to find it with this toy.
The egg has the Satin Finish™ which makes it very easy to run over your partner’s body. This is especially true when you use your favorite lube. You can use this vibrating and pulsing egg on your partners, neck, on their back, on their chest, their nipples, on their butt, on their perineum (the million dollar spot), and around various parts of their genitals — just remember that you will likely want different vibration and pulses as you move it to various parts of your partner’s body. There is also a “retreival cord” in case you get a little too enthusiastic and it gets out of your fingers. Keep in mind that you can lose toys in your partner’s body – so be careful and use the cord to maintain control. A rushed trip to the ER will really destroy the mood — and I’ve heard it is very embarassing.
To provide some variety for yourself and your partner — take turns with the remote and with who controls the location and placement of the egg. You can hold the egg, while your partner controls the remote. Or, you can control the remote while you partner moves the egg over their body. Take turns pleasing one another and definitely use your imagination. Where would you use your hands or mouth on your partner? Try the egg on each of these places and you may want to use it as an addition to an erotic massage.
Master Sexpert Tips -
- Use some lube for clitoral, or anal massage – even if you will only touch the opening of the anus
- Never use a toy in the anus and move to the vagina without cleaning it thoroughly first – with toy cleaner or soap and water.
- Be creative – this toy has a great shape, so turn it, use it on any erogenous zones on your body and use at different angles to see which feel better for you. Let your partner try many variations and let him/her know what you like better. Then use it on them

- Be sure to thoroughly clean all toys before and after you use them. This is really easy with toy cleaner or soap and hot water.
- This toy can be used alone to add some spice to your masturbation or can be used with a partner. It can also be used on a man or a woman — imagination and creativity is the key.
What tips can you add?? Feel free to share your experiences with the Bliss Egg.

I was looking through the toys that I have collected over the last 8 or 9 months and was trying to figure out what I’d like to review next. I’m looking through the different toys and one very common toy is missing – there wasn’t one dildo. Now, what self respecting toy reviewer can have a collection without at least one dildo and it has to be one that looks and feels like the real thing. Am I right?
So, I added the Extreme Natural Vibrating Cock to my “wish list”. I figure, if you’re going to do it – go to the “extreme”. Let me say this up front — I do not believe that bigger is the only way to go or even the best way to go. There is so much that is more important than just size. Although, it is an element that can add to the experience. With a dildo, you aren’t going to get deep passionate kisses or mind blowing oral sex – so the size and the feel are important.
I prefer the “whole package”, but for fun alone, fun in the shower or as an accessory with a partner – this is a lot of fun. Just girth and length in a toy is fun, but wouldn’t you rather feel a toy that is formed like a real penis — come on, you know you would
Take a look at the picture, the head is shaped like a real penis and the veins along the shaft are very – dare I say it – life like
You will even enjoy the feel of this toy in your hands as you stroke it – I mean clean it…. but I digress…..
For people who are new to using sex toys, this is a pretty big size. Depending on the size you personally prefer – it can be used for vagina and/or anal penetration – for either, I’d recommend plenty of lube – especially for any anal play.
This toy is waterproof – so you can use it in the tub or shower. It also has a remote control that you or a partner can use. When you are using this toy with a partner, you can take turns with who has control of the dildo and the remote – to get a wide variety of experiences. Anyone who has read one of my reviews knows that I recommend plenty of creativity
We know there are many possible ways to stimulate the female body — nipples, neck, inner thighs, fingers, toes, the clitoris, the anus and so many other areas. While reaching orgasm from vaginal penetration alone is rare — when the rest of the body is turned on and especially the clitoris — sometimes vigorous penetration and thrusting is just what we need — and this toy is great for that. Whether alone or with a partner – give it a try. If you want to experience double penetration without being with two men — definitely give this a try. Of course, you can try that with a partner and almost any dildo or vibrator.
This dildo also has a great suction cup on the bottom — you can use it on the floor, the wall, the shower or tub or anywhere else. This strong suction cup should hold for moderate or vigorous thrusting.
For the folks who would like to know the actual size — the head is about 1 1/2″ across, building to just over 2″ at the base and 8″ from the tip to the base. (Let me add just a note that the average penis is 5-6″ — for comparison. I have heard the urban legends that the average penis size is 8-9″ – but I haven’t seen any scientific data to back that up. If you have – feel free to share.)
NOTE – The description on the website mentions huge testicles – but check the picture and you will see that isn’t right. I really liked this dildo and the addition of the vibrator is a nice touch. However, I would prefer that the wire plug into the dildo instead of the remote, so that there wouldn’t be any wire in the way when you don’t want to use the remote.
Master Sexpert Tip
- You can use this on your clitoris, in your vagina or in your anus, but never use a toy in your anus and then move it to your vagina without cleaning it thoroughly first.
- You can use a condom on a toy when using it around your anus, then remove the condom to move the toy to your vagina – to avoid having to clean it in the middle of your play.
- Always use plenty of lube with your toys to increase your pleasure – even if personal lubrication is not a concern, the additional lube will give you even more fun
- Try the toy on yourself and your partner, if your partner is interested. Or have your partner use the toy on you.
- This is a toy you can easily use by yourself or with a partner or for your partner. Remember you can take turns with your partner and yourself controlling the toy and the remote for added variety.
- Always clean your toys before and after you use them.
- This isn’t a “small” toy – so don’t be worried about using plenty of lube.
- Finally – have fun, be creative, use your imagination and I always recommend being spontaneous…..

There is much that is said about pornography, both positive and negative – mainly depending on who you talk to and their perspective.
Where do many people get their perspective on porn? The most common places are:
- Classmates/peers or Friends
- Mother, Father or Siblings
- Mentors, Teachers, Coaches or Counselors
- Clergy or your religion
- Media or TV
- Uncles, Aunts or Other relatives
Anyone that you spend time with could be where you got your perspective about porn, whether it’s good or bad. That is especially true with most religious clergy. Family members and friends can have an interesting impact on our thoughts and people who have a supervisory relationship with us can definitely change or form our opinions – like teachers, coaches or mentors.
Where did you learn about porn?
- High school and/or college locker room
- A friend’s house
- Corner drug store that sells a wide variety of magazines
- A video store that carries adult movies
- Online – through porn sites, ads, emails, forums, etc
- You may have heard in a family discussion
- Your parents or another relative may have a collection
- Older sibling – usually an older brother
- Cable or pay TV options
I remember the first time I opened a Playboy magazine – it was at my aunt and uncle’s house and I was babysitting my cousin, so I had the run of the house while they were out. My uncle had a big collection in the attic bedroom and that was my room whenever I watched my cousin overnight for them. Of course I’d heard hushed tones of family members and religious family friends that Playboy was the “devils work”. I was a kid, what did I know J But that does support the fact that many of us got our first impressions from family and religion.
Centuries ago – fine art often included nude men and women. If you look really close, they are often doing a variety of things, of course, that depends on where you see the art. But its still interesting that in other countries, there is fine art, statues, and other respected pieces of art which feature nude bodies.
However, nude or nearly nude bodies in movies and pictures are viewed as being bad in the United States. That often depends on the type of people you are around. I’ll share more about my experiences in a video store that rented and sold porn in another post, but I can tell you that we had a wide variety of people who rented and bought our movies. There were men, women, single and married people, some were very religious and they usually wandered around the store until the other people left. But they still rented porn on a regular basis. So – porn can be viewed by both genders, various relationship statuses, various religious viewpoints and many other variables.
Pornography or Erotica
Here is an interesting definition of erotica – Erotica has an interactive definition in that its meaning directly relates with who makes the classification. To be delineated as erotic it must be by the viewer’s standards an acceptable depiction of the acts of love and sex. So, the distinction is subjective and depends on the viewer.
Erotica is very popular with many women – along with movies and books that could easily be called soft porn. This can include novels, short stories, movies with erotic content (often Unrated) and sometimes soap operas push the limits – although the sheets are placed strategically. On the other hand, if a man read or watched the same thing, would many people automatically classify it as porn? I’ve got news for you – women watch porn and they have been watching it for a long time.
In recent years, there have been porn movies that are geared to women – and these can be just as graphic as the movies that men enjoy. But you will often see some differences. If you would like details about that – you should read Porn by Erika Lust. It’s a great book about women and porn – it also gives a great history of porn that many men would enjoy. My review is posted here – http://shedyourinhibitions.com/2010/07/30/book-review-good-porn-by-erika-lust/
So – how do you personal draw the line between erotica and porn? How do you feel about these movies or the books and how did you develop that viewpoint?
We’ll discuss more about pornography in future posts. If you would like to check into an online course that delves into the history or porn, details about porn, ways to use porn to spice up your love life and much more, check http://www.loveologyuniversity.com/ShortCourseDetails.aspx?CourseID=53&a_aid=litekepr

Good Porn by Erika Lust
We all know that the majority of porn is watched by men. However, more and more women are watching porn – and I noticed long ago that there are very different attitudes between men and women when it comes to renting, buying, and watching porn.
About 15 years ago I managed a video store that rented mainstream movies and also had a section of adult movies. I learned which customers rented each type of movie – but I also noticed something interesting. Many of the men who rented porn, came into the store and wandered through all the sections, glancing at many video box covers – eventually ending up in the area where they could choose their adult movies. However, the women who rented porn walked in the door and straight to the back of the store. The men would linger over the covers for a long time – but the women could make their decision in just a few minutes. It was interesting and entertaining to watch on a daily basis.
Over the last 15 years, some things have changed in the adult movie industry and the content they are producing and distributing. I remember in the mid 90s, there were many movies produced to appeal to men – and I bought our videos, so I was familiar with the selection of movies available each month. There were some more “story” type movies which were the ones that were prompted as “women’s” porn. These were much tamer than the “men’s” movies and I often thought they were too tame – but that’s just a personal observation J (I’ll share more about these experiences in another post.)
However – now, there are directors and producers who are developing better porn for women. That is the topic of Good Porn by Erika Lust. You may wonder why she is qualified to write this book. That’s because she is the Award Winning director of Five Hot Stories for Her (2007) and the Barcelona Sex Project (2008).
These are the topics in the book -
- Chapter 1 – Porn For Men
- Chapter 2 – Women, Feminism, and Pornography
- Chapter 3 – The History of Porn
- Chapter 4 – FAQs
- Chapter 5 – A Dictionary of Porn
- Chapter 6 – Horror Movies, Comedies and Porn
- Chapter 7 – A Word to the Wise Wanker
- Chapter 8 – Sexy Shopping
- Chapter 9 – A Smorgasbord of Adult Films
- Chapter 10 – Relax and Enjoy It
- Chapter 11 – Adult Films for Grown Up Women: A Manifesto
This book is written in a way that it is very useful for people who aren’t familiar with the diversity in the porn industry, but also full of detail for people who understand what is available.
One of my favorite parts is the “In the Phony, Predictable Porn by Men”. She totally nails it (I’ll let you decide about the pun) – there are many things that you just know will be in traditional porn films. Some of these things appeal to women, but it seems that these things turn off a good number of women. So- women need to know that there are alternatives – there are a growing number of women directing and producing porn —- that appeals to women in a greater way.
There are plenty of objections to porn that we’ve all heard – but seriously, how many women do you know who enjoy steamy Lifetime movies or various series – that contain plenty of steamy scenes. What about soap operas – is there a place of network TV where you see more sex and especially in the middle of the day?
So – there are plenty of women who enjoy erotic, sexual content and now they can find a selection of adult movies that are more graphic, but done in a more subtle way. There is atmosphere in these films that you won’t find in the porn produced by men. To quote Erika Lust – “We want sexually explicit images, but we want to call the shots when it comes to how they are made.” She also says, “We want films that are made for adult women, films that show us real women, films that tell us about our sexuality. We don’t want to be portrayed as passive objects or victims but as active subjects giving and receiving pleasure. We want to see other women enjoying themselves.”
There is a great section in the book that gives details of the better known porn over the last 30-40 years. I bet you’ve heard of Deep Throat, Debbie Does Dallas, The Green Door, The Devil in Miss Jones and many more – the details are all here. Learn about various directors over the years, the differences in their work. Learn why you will likely see multiple women having sex on screen, but rarely see two men showing any affection.
If you enjoy surfing the online porn sites, there are plenty mentioned in the book – where you may find some new videos and clips that you will enjoy. You will also learn about the many types of porn – there are many sub categories in the porn industry and this is your guide book to learn more and to learn how to identify the types that will appeal to you. In addition there is information and reference links for information about adult boutiques, sex toys, and so much more.
Very simply – this is an awesome guidebook to help anyone understand porn and various parts of the ever expanding sexual options better. If you are ready to get in touch with your sensual, sexy side and you would like to learn more about the type of adult movies that are available – you need this book – today!
